STUDY
ABROAD
Environmental Studies in Australia, Spring Semester
2002
Comprehensive travel of eastern Australia. Extensive field studies,
research projects, and education in Australian ecosystems an integral
part of the program.
RESEARCH
PROJECTS
Northfield
Habitat Corridors, Spring Semester 2003
Used GIS (ArcView 3.2a) to recommend a system of corridors to
link existing natural areas in the Northfield, MN area. Based
recommendations on literature review and community input. See
the project
website for full details.
Age
and Size Structure of Relic Fir Populations, Summer 2002
to Spring 2003
Analyzed the age and size of relic balsam fir (Abies balsamea)
(L.) Mill. populations in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa
using dendrochronolgy. Current age of stands will hopefully give
insight into future population viability.
Size
Structure Studies of Restoration Forests, Summer 2002
Participated in a project that analyzes the restoration effort
on the St. Olaf Natural Lands from a size structure standpoint.
Implemented GPS location of studied trees and management of data
via ArcView 3.2a.
GIS and Fire Modeling, Spring Semester 2001
Used FARSITE 4.0 and ArcView 3.2a to analyze the impact of topography
and fuels on the historical maintenance of the prairie-forest
border in southern Minnesota.
RESEARCH
INTERESTS
Landscape ecology, habitat fragmentation,
conservation biology, forest ecology
